If you’ve purchased Austin real estate to establish Texas residency for your incoming UT Austin student, chances are you’ll be spending a bit of time in the “River City” as you get your new student settled. Before classes get underway this fall, we recommend a bit of sightseeing. There is something for everyone in Austin, including visitors of all ages—from kids to UT Austin students to their parents and extended family.
Here are some recommendations that shouldn’t be missed.
#1—The State Capitol
Located in the heart of central Austin, the State Capitol stands proudly, representing Texas’s legislative center. Much of the building remains unchanged since its opening in 1888, although a large-scale renovation in the 1980s added a 667,000-square-foot underground extension to accommodate a growing government body. It’s free to tour.
#2—Austin City Limits Live at the Moody Theater
Austin is well-known for its rich music scene, and chances are your favorite band has played at ACL Live at some point. The Austin City Limits TV program, the longest-running music series in American television history, is taped there.
#3—LBJ Presidential Library
Browsing a library might sound boring, but this library dedicated to the 36th president of the United States, has everything from the expected artifacts to the quirkiest exhibits.
#4—Austin Bats
Another city nickname Austin boasts is “Bat City.” According to many experts, Austin is home to the largest urban bat colony in North America. A bridge renovation in 1980 created the ideal spaces for bats to take refuge in against predators—and they never left. In the spring, Mexican free-tailed bats migrate north and raise their offspring in the bridge. The nightly mass exodus of this nocturnal species is sure to impress!
#5—SoCo District
If you’re seeking the best in entertainment, nightlife, cafes, festivals, and shopping, head about 5 miles south of down Austin to SoCo. Named after its location along South Congress Avenue, the shops lining the avenue are an attraction to locals and tourists alike who are looking for unique and retro items. The area is also known for its excellent restaurants, many of which offer outdoor patios for the best in people-watching.
